So, on Saturday I was in Sheffield for Ollie's birthday party. Already grumpy from the cold that Maz had thoughtfully given me, and extremely pissed from a combination of lots of booze and dinner consisting of pink Party Ring biscuits and pringles, this bloke who is nothing short of charming calmly tells me that Thatcher did the right thing and the unions were getting too powerful.

And I'm off. This guy is a dyed in the wool Thatcherite: she did good, union power is bad, capitalism yay! All that. I'm soon pointing out how stupid he is, and at the same time fighting an argument over Russian history with someone with a degree in it.

And I'm winning! It was great, it was like "Is this all you got? Huh? Come on, bring it on! Bring it fucking on!"

You think Stalin led on from Lenin? Then why did Stalin have everyone shot? Come on, you got to do better than that!

You think Thatcher was so great? How about 3 recessions in a decade, tripling unemployment, decreasing social mobility, de-industrialising for political reasons, putting 10% of the population below the poverty line, cutting public services? Come on, is that all you got!

I should say, I don't think I persuaded him of anything. I think I may have ruined all chance of that when he said something like "Can I just make a point?" and I said, "No, you're a twat. Fuck off" and walked out.

What I feel so great about is it's a kind of confirmation. Nothing he or my other correspondent said made a single point against my point of view, and I was clearly better informed about pretty much everything than this guy with a business degree. All those years reading obscure political articles and books haven't been wasted, since I could kick this guy's arse around the room with my eyes shut. Those who know me know of my almost total insecurity about pretty much everything - this felt like victory of some kind. Absolutely brilliant.

So I should probably feel embarrassed about being rude, but on the other hand, he is convinced that Thatcher was a force for good, so his view on the world is both
a) Morally dubious, and
b) Factually incorrect.

And I'll defend that statement in any court you like.
